Effect of lightning mast placement on underground power cable jacket stress within high voltage substations

This study aims to investigate the impact of lightning masts placement on underground cables within high voltage substations. While subject discharges near has been covered with open cable runs and wind farms in many papers, this focuses events substations considering associated effective zones, which were not available literature. Substations built areas prone activity experience frequent that cause potential rise earthing system into hundreds kilovolts. The potentials propagating soil grid affect jackets terminated substation. numerical analysis problem is carried out using Current Distribution, Electromagnetic fields, Grounding Soil structure (CDEGS) software engine for different configurations mast placements varied separation, electrode length, resistivity, current. Study findings indicate provision masts/down conductors as far possible or at least twice zone radius from termination/route electrodes ensures relatively lower stress voltages.
